INSPIRATION

As an American born Nigerian, I have  constantly been stuck in the middle of two cultures and having to navigate how to fit in authentically to both. Code switching, striving academic excellence, trying desperately not to succumb to stereotypes are a part of the first & second generations' plight. And I became fascinated with what this plight does to us… what have we lost by trying to assimilate? And what can we rediscover? I started talking to my great-uncle about our people, as my father says " I was living with history,” only a few stops away on the E train. The more stories my great-uncle told the more I became engulfed  in the history of Igbo people, including some of myths and stories told to the generations before mine. Working with my sister, Chik, we began to create this story of a Nigerian millennial bogged down by trying to be the perfect corporate shill and this two spirit evil God in human form. This exploration was such a blessing, not only because I got to work with my sister, but because we got an opportunity to really dive into our history and learn from its riches.
